Monday Morning Quarterback, 10/31

Doane head coach and former Husker star Tommie Frazier will share his thoughts on college football every Monday in the Journal Star.

We played Concordia on Saturday and lost 23-10. They are a solid team, but we just didn’t do enough to win the game. On offense and defense, we didn’t make enough plays. Period. We are striving to be more consistent week in and week out, but we aren’t there yet. We have two games to build off for the rest of the season. Next week we travel to Hastings. They have some good players so it will take a four-quarter effort from us to win the game.

Nebraska lost by a touchdown to a good, and probably better, Oklahoma team. No shame in that, but it does hurt in the Big 12 North race. They had a slow start versus the Sooners, and that’s not a recipe for success. But OU might be the best or second-best team they may face all year, when it’s all said and done. Oklahoma had three losses coming in, but two of those losses were to undefeated teams and the other one was to a team with just one loss, so people might have been reading too much into the Sooners’ losses.

A healthy Adrian Petersen and a much improved Rhett Bomar showed OU has some serious pop left. The Husker defense couldn’t contain Petersen in the first half and that gave Oklahoma a lot of momentum early, and on the road that is very important. Also, the defense wasn’t able to generate a pass rush like they have in games past and that hurt their chances on Saturday.

Offensively, they gave up way too many sacks, even against a very good OU front seven. The rushing attack never got on track, and that makes it really tough. Nebraska did show some grit in the second half with three touchdowns, and coach Callahan caught OU sleeping with Cory Ross’ TD pass. But they just put themselves in too big of a hole to come back and get the win.

Next week on the road versus a very good Kansas defense and an improving Jayhawk offense will make for an interesting matchup.

To hear more of Tommie Frazier’s thoughts, listen to “Armstrong Air’s Cornhusker Insider” at 7 p.m. Wednesdays on ESPN 1480 AM. A former Husker will join Tommie at Legends Bar and Grill at 84th and Holdrege streets.

Monday Morning Quarterback, 10/24

The Doane head coach and former Husker star will share his thoughts on college football every Monday in the Journal Star.

It was a tough week on the road for us versus Sioux Falls. We knew we were facing a very good team that just had a long winning streak broken. They beat us, 39-0.

Next week, we are looking to rebound against Concordia. It is a similar team to ours so we’ll see what happens. This week in practice we are going to focus on fundamentals and get after Concordia on Saturday.

Missouri’s quarterback Brad Smith is one of the most gifted guys around in college football. Maybe over his career they haven’t always had the best game plan for him, but he had it all going on Saturday, and Nebraska got both barrels. This year the MU offense seems to be geared more toward his strengths than it was last year.

He had a huge game versus NU in 2003. This time it wasn’t all with his legs, he also made some plays throwing the ball. Last week, I mentioned each game at linebacker would be a test without injured starters Stewart Bradley and Steve Octavien. Against the Tigers, that lack of experience and depth seemed to hurt NU a fair amount. That being said, going against Smith can be a chore for anyone. On the bright side, NU may not face another QB like Smith the rest of the season (and never Smith again).

Offensively, Nebraska was in a hole for much of the game and that seemed to dictate throwing the ball more than usual.  Zac Taylor may not have had his best numbers at Nebraska, but he kept the Huskers in the game despite some very spotty offensive line play and some crucial drops.

Oklahoma is coming to town next week for the Huskers. Maybe the Big 12 divisions have changed the frequency with which they play each other, but it’s still Nebraska-Oklahoma, one of the greatest rivalries in college sports. They weren’t even all that good when I was at Nebraska, but those were still some of hardest hitting games I played in at NU. And no one from Nebraska or Oklahoma wants to lose bragging rights for this one for the next few years.

The 1995 team is having a reunion next weekend, and unfortunately, I have to miss it. Having those players around will just make it that much more of a charged-up atmosphere at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

Monday Morning Quarterback, 10/17

Doane head coach and former Husker star Tommie Frazier will share his thoughts on college football every Monday in the Journal Star.

We lost a tough game to Dakota Wesleyan 17-13. We came out flat in the first half and fell behind, 10-0. It really hurt having a punt blocked deep in our own territory. But I liked the way we battled back in the second half by scoring two touchdowns.

However, we hurt our chances with a missed extra point that left us down four, so we needed to score a TD late in the game.

Our defense played well; we only gave up 112 yards in the first half and only 250 for the game. We did have a running back, Justin Nelson, go for 144 yards on 25 carries, so we will build off that.

Next week we play one of the best teams in NAIA, Sioux Falls, on the road. They just had a 40-game GPAC winning streak snapped, so they will be ready for us.

It was good to see Nebraska go on the road and get a win at Baylor. I think the Husker D-line was the difference. They weren’t blitzing much, but the defensive line was still able to get sacks and a lot of pressure on the Baylor quarterback.

I liked the plays Cortney Grixby made throughout the game. He had some pass breakups, and he had a nice punt return. He seems to be turning a corner, and he is only a sophomore.

With linebacker Stewart Bradley out for the year, it was nice to see backup Adam Ickes play a solid game. But now with two starters out for the year at linebacker, every week will be a test as their depth overall has taken a big hit.

The offense wasn’t pretty but found a way to get it done. Mostly passing in the first half and running in the second. NU didn’t break any huge runs in the game, but it controlled the game by nickel-and-diming them on the yardage on the runs. Quarterback Zac Taylor wasn’t as sharp as he has been at times this season, but he still made some big throws, especially the TD pass in the second half to give them some breathing room.

The season is only half over and maybe it’s too soon to make any concrete judgments, but through six games they seem to have more resolve than they did last year. They compete harder when they get a bad break. That will carry them far if they can keep that up, as they have some important games coming up that will determine the Big 12 North winner.
